Social Studies Dates

January 11th: While studying Economics we will be giving students an opportunity to practice the concept of bartering and trading. If your child would like to participate in our bartering day, please see below:

•Your child will need to bring one item from home.

•The item must be able to fit into a small paper bag.

•Your child should only bring an item they might be willing to part with.

•In order to participate, students need to bring the item in on January 11th.

•Your child does not need to trade an item unless they feel it is a fair trade, so they can very well come home with their own item if the choose to. This is entirely their choice and an opportunity to experience a barter/trade if they want to.

February 3rd: This will be the date of our class store.

Holiday Cheer!

We celebrated the holidays on our last day before winter break! We made edible dreidels, played dreidels, learned about the origin of the candy cane, and we made ourself into an elf for an ornament. Here are some pictures of our day!

Economics Project

When we get back from winter break, we are going to be learning about Economics in Social Studies and we will be having a class store where students can sell an item of theirs and buy an item from a classmate--we have fake money that the class will be earning that they can use to buy at our store.

I know how busy everyone is around the holidays, but I wanted to share this now, in case you were looking for an activity to work on during the winter break. This is an activity we will be doing about 4 weeks when we return from break, so it is not due anytime soon. However, I figured advance notice might be helpful. Below are some ideas of what your child can make to "sell" at our class store, but they can create anything they want!

Ideas:
Popsicle picture frames or bookmarks
Painted rocks for paperweights
Noodle Necklaces/Bracelets
Decorated Pencils
Pet Rocks
Friendship Bracelets
Drawings
Greeting Cards
Paperclip art

Candy Corn Tower Challenge

We were challenged to construct a tower using only candy corn and toothpicks. We learned that it takes multiple tries sometimes to get it right as we explored the best way to get our towers tall!

Gummy Bear Experiment

As scientists, we created our hypothesis as to what will happen when we put gummy bears in cups of various liquids for 24 hours. We made our predictions based on what we knew about the liquids and what the gummy bears looked liked, felt like, smelled like, and tasted like before we put them in.

We then put them in water, salt water, vinegar, and baking soda (the only non-liquid). Here we are observing them right after we put them in their cups.

Day one: observing the gummy bears:

24 Hours Later:  A lot has changed for our gummy bears!
The baking soda gummy bear stayed the same, but felt harder.
The water gummy bear got really big!

The vinegar gummy bear dissolved.

The salt water gummy bear expanded.

We Had the Whole Playground to Ourselves!

We earned an extra recess today and had the entire playground to ourselves!

Field Trips

Field Trip forms went out on 10/7 and information was sent in my weekly email.  Please check your child's folder and review them all carefully. When you fill out the permission forms, please be sure to fill out both sides (front and back). Permission forms and money are due 11/28/16. That is over our track out, so it would be optional to get the forms and money in by 11/10 for our track.

We are going to Historic Oak View County Park on 4/25 and volunteers are strongly encouraged. We will have an in school field trip where Science is Fun comes to our school and we do sound experiments. This will be on 3/31. Chaperones are not needed for this field trip.

More information will come as the dates get closer, our first step is filling out the permission slip forms and payments.

Please let me know if you have any questions at this time!

A Wednesday Afternoon...

Practicing place value and scanning the QR Codes to see if we are correct.

Seeing which numbers are greater than, less than, or equal too..with pumpkins.

Sorting odd and even numbers.

Thinking like a scientist and wondering if our hypothesis will be correct. We predicted what would happen when we put a solid soap into the microwave.

We were surprised to see that the soap expanded! We will be writing our conclusions tomorrow.

Historians

We learned that artifacts are items from the past that help us to better understand the past. We brought in an item from our life that is important to us and pretended it was an "artifact" of someone from the past. We then became historians for the day and explored the different artifacts our classmates brought in and tried to see what that artifact told us about the owner.

We are wrapping up our unit on matter and represented the atoms that are in matter...with cheerios!

The finished product!

If your child would like to wear the following colors to school:
October 3: wear blue for bullying prevention day
October 19th: wear orange for unity day

Artifacts

Next week we will start a new Social Studies unit. One of the things we will be discussing is how we can learn about someone/something from artifacts. Can your child please bring in something that means something to them? Please do not put their name on it, as part of the lesson is to see what we can tell about this person by their artifact. Can you please bring in the artifact on Tuesday, 10/4.

Matter Experiment

Today we learned that matter can change forms from solids to liquids and then back to solids again. Here are our scientists at work!

First, we observed chocolate chips in their solid state of matter.

Then, we added heat from our hands onto the chocolate chips and they turned into a liquid.

Then, we got SPECIAL permission to go to the teacher's lounge and put the liquid chocolate chips into the freezer and saw them turn back into a solid!
