Persuasive Writing Can Taste Good!

On our first day back from track out, one of the things we discussed was persuasive writing and how authors try to get you to act or feel a certain way towards a topic. We decided to try writing a persuasive writing piece about why a particular Hershey Kiss flavor is the best. The options were: milk chocolate, caramel, cookies & cream and dark chocolate. As you can imagine, this was a tough decision for our writers. After they completed their taste test, they began writing their persuasive piece to get readers to believe the chocolate they chose is definitely the best!

We also took a vote and caramel was the class favorite. Tomorrow, we will share our writings and see if any of our opinions can be swayed.

The Museum of LIfe and Science

Our class had an adventurous time at the Museum of Life and Science today. We didn't let the rain, or threat of freezing rain, stop us from having fun and exploring!

SOME of our explorations included:

  • Making paper airplanes and using a mechanical launcher to fly them.
  • Hearing our movements on an interactive dance floor that turned our actions into sounds.
  • Participating in a hand-washing experiment.
  • Performing an experiment in the "lab" by mixing different salt water concentrations to create a colorful concoction! We also sampled salts from seas around the world.
  • We attended a class on animals that live in the wetlands and were able to touch a salamander and a baby crocodile!
Ready for some fun!

Our field trip is scheduled for March 5th, 2015.  We will be taking a charter bus to the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, NC.  We ask all students to be at school by 8am on Thursday, so that they have time to check in and eat breakfast (if they ordered it).  We will leave school promptly at 8:30am.  We have a strict schedule and will not be able to wait for students who do not arrive at school on time.  Please note that this is prior to school beginning and you will need to arrange transportation to school that morning.  We will return to school by 3pm Thursday afternoon and students will be able to return home using their normal method of transportation.

Students who did not preorder lunch will need to bring their own lunch from home. Please send lunch in a Ziploc bag (with name written on it) that can be sealed and put in a cooler on ice once students arrive at school.  Chaperones will need to provide their own transportation to and from the school.  If you will be chaperoning, you may check your student out when we return to school.  We are asking that you not send additional money with students for trips to the gift shop or “extras” while at the museum.

Please feel free to contact me with any additional questions or concerns you may have! Also, please hope for no snow that day!
